How whiplash affects your body

Virginian residents who get involved in car crashes often suffer from something called whiplash. Though some people may believe this is not a severe injury and can be taken care of without medical intervention, that is not always the case.

Mayo Clinic states that whiplash can actually lead to a number of intense physical side-effects, some of which may inhibit a person's ability to move or work, impacting their overall quality of life. For example, one stereotype is that whiplash injuries will cause headache and pain in the neck and that those are the only symptoms to watch out for. While neck and head pain is common, whiplash can also manifest in these symptoms:

  • Dizziness
  • Tinnitus
  • Numbness, tingling, or burning sensations in the limbs
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of motion range in the neck

A person may even experience mental health changes, including episodes of depression or increased irritability. A person's memory functions and ability to concentrate may also be impacted.

Rush.edu points out that it actually doesn't take a lot of force to cause whiplash either, contrary to the belief that the force needs to be very strong. They also advise against ignoring symptoms, simply hoping that they will heal on their own in time. The aforementioned symptoms can be signs of more severe physical damage. A person could end up requiring surgery, medication, or physical therapy to aid in the healing process. Leaving whiplash untreated might make it worsen over time rather than improve.

Rather than assuming that whiplash is simple and easy to deal with, it is better to err on the side of caution and treat it as though it may be serious. This can lessen the damage one has to deal with.
